Book Club Questions

 For General Book Club Readers:

Thank you for reading Heart Warriors and welcoming it to your book club! Book Clubs are special places that celebrate friendship and personal growth, and as a writer I’m deeply touched by anyone who would consider Heart Warriors for their club selection.

Please remember, this is just a guide and all of your questions and comments about the book are valid because they come from your heart, half or whole.
Question One: Adams touches on themes of entitlement in her expectations of pregnancy and motherhood. What do you think her experience says about the American sense of entitlement?

Question Two: Knowing that it is nonfiction, how does Heart Warriors impact you differently than it would have if it were fiction? If it were fiction, what do you wish had happened differently to the characters and how do you think that would have changed their lives?

Question Three:  Adams primary goal in telling her family’s story was to elicit empathy, not pity or apathy. Do you think she succeeded?

Question Four:  Congenital Heart Disease is the single most common and lethal birth defect in the world both in the most advanced and the most underdeveloped nations. Did you know anything about CHD before you read Heart Warriors? How has this book impacted your view of this disease?

Question Five:   Adams is ambivalent about abortion in general, but adamant that it was not the right choice for her. What are your thoughts on her decision? What are your thoughts on the consequences for Liam?

Question Six: As Amanda recovers from her grief in waves and rebuilds her own ability to be empathetic, she must recognize that the needs of the CHD Heartland are not greater or lesser than any other constituency fighting a disease. How would you face a conflict where “your cause” must compete with other causes for limited resources?

Question Seven: What are your thoughts on Jim and Amanda’s marriage?

Question Eight:  How did the experiences in Heart Warriors change Adams? What did she lose and what did she gain?

Question Nine:  How would you parent Liam and Moira? How do you view Adams’ challenges in parenting?

Question Ten: What did you think about Click Clack and the woman who told Amanda Liam was lucky to have Congenital Heart Disease?

Question Eleven:  Did you find the Adams family likable? Why or why not?

Question Twelve:  Would you recommend Heart Warriors, and if so to what kind of reader?

For Heartlanders:
This is a guide for Heartlanders to host a book club around Heart Warriors. Heart Moms or Adult Survivors can get together, or a Heart Mom and Dad can bring their extended family and friends together to talk about their own experiences.

Please remember, this is just a guide and all of your questions and comments about the book are valid because they come from your heart, half or whole.

Question One:  Adams found out about Liam’s heart before he was born. Was that your experience too, or was it different? How was your diagnosis experience similar to or different from Amanda and Jim’s?

Question Two:  Amanda talks about her stages of grief and being stuck on the anger. What has your grief journey been like?

Question Three:  If you are a family member/friend of a Heart Mom or Adult Survivor, how did reading Heart Warriors affect your understanding of what your loved one’s experience has been like?

Question Four:  What do you think Liam’s book would be like when he’s an adult? What do you think he would say about his parents and his CHD? How about Moira’s memoir of her own life?

Question Five: What was the hardest part about reading Heart Warriors for you?

Question Six: Did Heart Warriors motivate you to be a stronger advocate or do more to further CHD research or support programs?

Question Seven: What are your thoughts on Jim and Amanda’s marriage?

Question Eight:  How did the experiences in Heart Warriors change Adams? What did she lose and what did she gain? How does this parallel your own experience?

Question Nine:  How would you parent Liam and Moira? How do you view Adams’ challenges in parenting?

Question Ten:  What did you think about Click Clack and the woman who told Amanda Liam was lucky to have Congenital Heart Disease?

Question Eleven:  Did you find the Adams family and their story relative to your own lives?

Question Twelve:  Would you recommend Heart Warriors to readers who have not been impacted by CHD?

Tell me what you think.
